Pharmacological mechanisms Glucose is a carbohydrate alimentary substance, which after oxidation is transformed to the basic energy source. In this manner is provided energy for the functioning of the nervous and cardiovascular system, skeletal muscles and all intensive functioning organ cells. Intravenous application of isotonic (4.5-5%) solution acts as a plasma substitute. Hypertonic solution injecting extracts fluids from the tissues, including areas with transudate and exudate; improves the metabolism; improves the detoxication function of the liver; improves contractility of the heart muscle; causes vasodilatation and increase diuresis. The 40% hypertonic solution facilitates blood coagulation and reduces nitric substances loss in febrile conditions. It causes denaturation of the proteins and in this manner acts as a nonspecific protein stimulant of the reticular endothelia.
