Drug form and composition Solution, eardrops. 1 ml Solution contains: 2.5 mg Nitrofural; 31.25 mg Tetracaine hydrochloride; 87.5 mg Phenazone.
Indications Inflammatory and purulent diseases of the external ear duct; acute inflammation of the middle ear; following paracentesis and spontaneous perforation; chronic purulent inflammations of the middle ear; following radical trepanation of the ear.
Dosage and administration After cleaning of the external ear duct 4-8 drops are applied in the ear 3-4 times daily. The head should remain in lateral flexion for 3-5 minutes, and after that the external ear duct is covered by cotton tampon. Usually 3-4 procedures are sufficient. In infants is applied 1 drop, 2 times daily.
Contraindications Hypersensitivity to any of preparation ingredients, hot weather, caused by Aspergillus.
Special warnings and precautions In existence of pus, blood, and other protein substances the effect of Furotalgin is diminished. So before application of the drops the external ear should be well cleaned.
Drug interactions No data for clinically significant drug interactions are available so far.
Adverse reactions Rarely allergy reactions (contact dermatitis) to tetracaine and phenazone may appear.
Pharmacological mechanisms Furotalgin is a combined preparation attended for local application. It possesses antimicrobial, analgesic and astringent actions. One of its constituents, nitrofural, is a nitrofurine derivative, exerting bactericide and bacteriostatic actions on the large number Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including streptococci, staphylococci, coli-bacteria, etc. It depresses the development of the microorganisms, resistant to sulphonamides and antibiotics. Nitrofural probably acts by inhibition of the dehydrogenase systems in bacterial cells. Tetracaine hydrochloride is a synthetic local anesthetic, suitable for surface analgesia, whereas Phenazone possesses analgesic and weak astringent effects. The solvent - glycerin, dries the external ear duct and facilitates penetration of the active components.
